Richard Gowing - Horseman, Farrier and Soham Town Reeve

Product Information

When Tim Webb of Soham Roots, Soham Local History Group phoned me up to say that he had discovered about 300 certificates, nailed to the wall, prizes for various horse shows in the old premises of A H Worth I knew Richard Gowing was just the person to tell me about them.  These certificates ranging from Championship prizes at the Royal Shows across the country to local horse shows were sadly decaying in an old tack room which was once the pride of a great horseman Tom Ellis (see NLDVD23 by John Ellis his son also a horseman).

Richard, born to a farming family in Norfolk in 1933 moved with his Father to Soham when he was 14 and started working for Worths on the farm.  Tom Ellis was head horseman and they had 150 horses mostly Suffolks.  Richard tells us how Tom became his hero.  Richard as you will hear went on to become Blacksmith, Farrier, Agricultural Engineer and finally managing the land for A H Worth before setting up as an agricultural engineer in his own right.  He is a member of the worshipful company of farriers and a former president of NAFBAg.  Renowned as a show judge Richard is now involved in many duties such as the Soham Town Reeve and is in charge of the Historic Soham Commons and administering the fun of the ‘Six Just Men of Soham’ whose charities helped to form the Grammar School.

He relates here many stories around his life that are so influenced by Tom Ellis his mentor.
